  • Most Expensive Photo - Rhein II Worth $4.3 Million

    On November 9th, 2011 a new world record price was set at a Christie’s New York auction when a collector paid $4.3 million for a photograph referred to as the “Rhein II.”

    The photograph measures 73 x 143 inches. It was taken from a camera that took less than a second to shoot so talk about a great way of making $4.3 million in less than a second.

    The photo shows a river in Germany which was taken in 1999 but what makes it so valuable is that it has Andreas Gurskyand signature. Andreas is one of Germanys best photographers and is even considered one of the best photographers in the world if not the best. The winner was a very famous German collector from Galerie Monika Sprüth, Cologne.

    Christie’s Auction House describes the photograph as “a breathtaking masterpiece of scale and wonderment, as well as the icon of Andreas Gursky’s pioneering photographic oeuvre, Rhein II, en-wraps the viewer in the sheer beauty of its scene.

    It is one of an edition of six photographs, four of which are currently housed in major international public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Tate Modern, London, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, and Glenstone, Potomac.”
