Descrption: “This Japanese Nobento Master Makie Lunch Box. This may possibly be the finest made and this comes with Provenance and documentation of original sale. Japanese Nobento Lacquer ware Lunch & Sake set. This was purchased in July of 1966 at Yokohoma Inc, In Kyoto Japan. The box was sold to the person I purchased this from. They were close friends with the owners, so they were sold this as an antique then and for a very good price at the time. At first I believed it to be Meiji Period c.1880-90. However after some research this does resemble some 18th C. Examples I have seen. The original Receipt describes this as a Antique gold lacquer Lunch box with design of figures in Landscapes c.1750ad. Either way this is one of the most incredible pieces of Lacquer I have ever seen. The Yabu Meizan of the Lacquer world accomplished this.; Just look at the work and the original bottles remain intact. Every corner and angle is superb and down with the finest Makie work.
This was a Imperial scholar piece or an imperial piece itself. Gold fleck under everything and the highest of quality you will ever see. Check out others on ebay and they are not half as nice and they are asking $3500-$5500 and this is around much much more with the original provenance and receipt this is worth twice the price and is incredible. Stands 12 1/4″ tall or 33cm tall x 12 1/4″ wide or 33cm wide with a depth of 7″ or 18cm. Superb incredible condition for it’s age. This belongs in a museum and or Sotheby’s and Christie’s wanted it but we did not have time to wait. Bronze handle and raised cloud work at it’s best”.
