On April 11, 1853 a oblong six-pointed brass star is issued to the entire police department. This badge is designed to be worn on the left lapel of the coat. This badge was worn until October 23, 1854. During this time period there were approximately 250 police officers working for the City of Boston. Because these badges were worn for just 18 months they are extremely rare and valuable. The best first issue badges have traceable history back to the family like this one does. This badge is missing the whistle loop and the bottom catch.
