    The Pearl Carpet of Baroda is the worlds most expensive rug. It sold on March 2009 in a Sotheby’s auction for $5.5 million.

    The rug measures 5×8 feet. It is itched with over a million seeds and pearls sapphires rubies and diamonds. The surface of the rug is made out of silk and deer hide. It is believed to have been made in 1865.

    This was the first time that the rug had ever sold at auction. It was originally estimated to bring in $5 million. After the bidding an anonymous phone bidder won it for a total of $5.5 million making it the worlds most expensive rug.

    Before this, the highest price realized for a rug was $4.5 million for a 17th century Persian Isfahan rug belonging to Doris Duke a prominent collector from the United States.
