Early ‘60s Fords don’t get much cooler than this amazing 1961 Sunliner. Restored in its correct Raven black with red and white interior color combination, it also packs Ford’s top-of-the-line 390 cubic inch powerplant, complete with dealer-installed 3×2 induction and a ton of original documentation. If you want an amazing 60s Galaxie, this one has to be at the top of your list. The Starliner coupe is one of the most graceful shapes to come out of the Ford Motor Company since the Continental Mark II, with a pillarless hardtop that is set off by three stylish medallions on the C-pillar. The last vestiges of tailfins were on the back, framing a beautifully crafted tail panel that looks like it’s made of hundreds of individual chrome buttons. Seriously, if you can look at this car and not fall in love, perhaps it’s time to take up gardening. The Raven Black finish accentuates the car’s sleek profile, and it is indeed the car’s original color, beautifully rendered in two-stage urethane. Body gaps are excellent, with everything fitting together like new. Bright trim runs along the rocker panels, flaring out into an stainless steel panel on the quarters, one of those cool design cues that were a hallmark of the early ‘60s. And while you’re down there, take a moment to note how straight the body really is—impressive, no? Inside, the code 35 red and white interior is exactly the right choice with Raven Black. Fully restored, it offers cloth inserts and vinyl trim, set off by silver piping, and it’s dazzling. Matching red carpets, amazing door panels with more stainless trim, and a matching dash have all been restored or replaced so it looks brand new. A pair of auxiliary gauges has been mounted down low, right under the original AM radio. Seat belts have been added for safety, and the overall look is sporty and upscale. And this is a full-sized cruiser, so a massive trunk carries a correct spare and jack assembly as well as a reproduction trunk mat, and you’ll note that there’s not a trace of rust anywhere. Ford’s big 390 offers a tri-power setup installed at the dealer, making it one of the most potent machines on the road in 1961. Hidden under the original style oval air cleaner, the 390 has been fully rebuilt and runs beautifully, with effortless performance that moves this luxury/performance cruiser with real authority. A few chrome dress-up pieces add some flash, but it’s mostly stock, which is definitely no demerit given how well it runs. Underneath, the chassis is solid and rust-free, showing solid floors and a newer dual exhaust system. Handsome polished Torque Thrusts wear 235/75/15 blackwalls, adding a period custom touch. This car is also highly documented, including the original owner’s manual, window sticker, dealer invoice, and warranty card, as well as a restoration album full of photos.
