This Stunning Culpeper-style microscope dates from the late 18 th century. The microscope is unsigned , but has been attributed to the work of George Adams JR. Surprisingly, little is known about Edmund Culpeper himself ,but it is said that he developed this type of microscope around 1725-1730.

The instrument is focused via the draw tube , which bears the engraved numbers 1-4. It has a sprung stage , which also has stage clips underneath, and two holes to accommodate a bug spike and condenser. The microscope comes in its’ original pyramidal mahogany box . Below is a drawer which contains the accessories ; Four objective lenses , forceps with ox bone black and white disc, bug spike, condenser ,glass live box , tweezers and four ox bone slides – each can accomadate four single specimens. Typical of this period, it has a tapering eyepiece with a sliding cover. At the base, there is a single sided concave mirror.

The microscope is of small proportion and measures 28cm tall. The box measures 35cm from the base to the brass phinial. The microscope is in good condition for an instrument of this period, and has a full set of five objectives . The box has a split at the rear and a few old repairs at the base ( no working key).

This superb Culpeper type microscope should appeal to the connoisseur collector of Georgian scientific instruments.
