    This is 1824 PORTER # 350 Charleston Slave Hire Tag Badge Up for sale is ORIGINAL Slave Tag, or Slave Hire Badge, dated 1824, Charleston. This is an AUTHENTIC, ORIGINAL Slave “Tag” or “Badge” that is Diamond shaped, measuring a full large 54mm wide x 56mm tall, Copper, with the standard small round hole punch at top for suspension, as made. This tag has a full and clear “1824″ date, plus a full clear and complete punch for the “PORTER” occupation at center. It has a deeply punched “350″ being the tag serial number. The city name is quite easy to read and full. It has a perfectly natural rich even brown patina, the face side reading: “CHARLESTON – 1824 – PORTER – 350″. Also clearly stamped with the hallmark of the maker, “LAFAR” below, for John Joseph lafar, a well known Charleston Silversmith. This Slave Tag came from Charleston South Carolina. Charleston South Carolina was the ONLY city in which Slave tags were issued.
