Malby 18 inch diameter terrestrial library globe on turned mahogany floor stand, dated 1879. The globe and the floor stand are very decorative and, at about 32 inches tall (81 cm), would make a beautiful addition to a home library, office or living room. Malby’s terrestrial globe compiled from the latest & most authentic sources including all the recent geographical discoveries. Agents philip, son & nephew, educational & geographical depot, 51, south castle street, liverpool, jany 15, 1873. The globe shows its age. There are horizontal splits perpendicular to the gore lines, but the map is basically all there and the globe may be described as being in sound, stable and decorative overall condition. The horizontal ring is in overall good condition. The stand is probably earlier than the globe. Here are some of the most interesting aspects of this globe: (1) malby was probably the most prolific globe maker ofthe 19th century; (2) the horizontal ring (which is inexcellent condition), the brass hour ring (at the top of the globe) and the globe’s highly detailed cartography give the globe an intricate, highly scientific appearance; (3) the states and territories of the united states are delineated individually; and (4) the seas are a quaint green color.
