    Description and Image By: amx-1

Amx-1 is a factory built, modified by Hurst, Super Stock race car. It is number 31 of only 52 ever built, making it one of the rarest vintage muscle cars ever built. The 52 Hurst modified cars were built for the sole purpose of drag racing and were not intended, or legal, to be used on the highway as none of these cars came with titles. These 52 cars were all “frost white” and had sequential vin. numbers starting with “X21360”. These numbers were stamped into the frame behind the steering box on all of the cars. This is the only absolute positive way to identify a real Hurst modified SS/Amx!! The vin tag was riveted to the plastic dash frame and many were lost or switched. Some of this occured when all 52 cars were being modified in Hursts large Ferndale warehouse. Many of the 52 cars had their dash changed to the 1970 dash and the dash tag does not match the frame. All of the cars were 390, 4 speed, with charcoal interiors and with radio and heater assemblies deleted. The cars came with factory stamped metal plates for the heater assemblies and plastic delete plates for the heater controls and radio. Hurst super shifters were used and were moved back and closer to the driver. Amx-1 was one of the more successful SS Amx’s as it held the NHRA SS/D and SS/C National records and it held the IHRA SS/C World record. There was a for sale ad in the National Dragster claiming the car was the “Fastest, Legal SS/C Car in the USA”. The car was owned and sponsered by Atlantic American for it’s entire racing life. The dealership was located in Norfolk, Va. and owned by Sam Vanderslice. And the cars two drivers were Nat Thompson and Donald Leland. There is a web site dedicated to this car and it’s history with many, many vintage articles, records, current and vintage photos, etc. Web site is www.amx-1.com . This car is one of the most documented, factory built super stock cars you will ever find. This documented car is listed on all of the SS Amx registrys such as www.ssamx.com , www.superstockamx.com and www.theamcforum.com under restoration by Thomas Benvie. The panels on this car are laser straight, excellent fit of doors and fenders. We have documentation and history on this car from 1969 to present. We have copies of all correspondence pertaining to Amx-1 from the first day of owning it to present day. This is the car that took the NHRA SS/D record from the “Drag-on-Lady” Amx. American Motors used this car to promote the success that AMC was having in drag racing. There are pictures of Amx-1 in books such as “Performance American Style”, “Amc’s Redliner Magazine”, Vince Edlebrocks new book “Edelbrock, Made in the USA” and many others. The Amx-1 web site will be included with this car and a large container full of articles, vintage and current pictures including many more that are not on the web site and a complete history of the car. There is also a production company that is including Amx-1 in a documentary currently being worked on called ” When Cars Had Names” that is about vintage drag racing. Again, there are hundreds of photos of this car on the above web sites.
