First Earliest Californian Gold Map … NO Reserve!
The front cover of this antique Folding Pocket Map reads “Gold Region” and on the inside it reads, “A correct Survey of the Gold region of California.” If you were an Eatener and you were thinking of participating in the Gold Rush. Gold was discovered January 24, 1848 by James Marshall at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma California and this map was published in Boston by H. Buford & Company in 1848. This map depicts the discovery area along the American River. When folded this hand tinted map measures only 3 1/8” by 4 ¾” and unfolded it measures 22” by 17 ¼”. The map is complete, but many years ago a past owner reinforced the back of the folded corners.
If you search the net you can find examples of this rare map described, but you will have a hard time finding one for sale.
