British artist Beryl Cook was famous for her comical paintings and limited edition prints of people, many of which are based on her home town of Plymouth, including Hen Night, Jackpot, Ladies Night, Bowling Ladies, Party Girls, Strippergram and Tango Busking.
Beryl Cook OBE was born in Surrey, England and was one of four children. She left school at 14 and worked in a variety of jobs including the fashion industry, where she developed an interest in observing and paying close attention to people’s appearances and behaviour, providing a platform for her paintings in later life.
Beryl Cook refused to paint the sinister aspects of life, instead she chose to depict happy, flamboyant and extrovert characters that live life to the full in situations which we can all recognise in today’s culture. The appeal of Beryl Cook’s work lies in their directness, exuberance and the instant laughter they create. Beryl Cook painted what she described as ‘ordinary people enjoying themselves’ mostly focusing on plump people in everyday and sometimes surreal situations.
In 1975 Beryl Cook held her first exhibition which resulted in a cover feature in The Sunday Times. Consequently, the following year Beryl Cook had her first sell out London exhibition. Since then her work has featured in many exhibitions and museums including the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Exhibition, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art. The female characters featured in her work were also made into two thirty minute animated films titled Bosom Pals which boasted a cast including Dawn French and Timothy Spall.
Beryl Cook’s artworks have been published in several books including The Works, Private View, New York, London, Bouncers, Happy Days and Cruising. Beryl Cook’s works were also featured in The Observer, The Sunday Times, Evening Post, Daily Telegraph, Evening Standard, Sunday Express, The Independent, Hello Magazine, Private Eye and the International Herald Tribune.
