On July 6th, 2011 Sotheby’s auctioned off a painting by Francesco Guardi. It is titled “monumental masterpiece Venice, a View of Rialto Bridge, Looking North, from the Fondamenta del Carbon.”
This set a record price as the second highest price paid at auction for an Old Master painting, when it realized $42,865.105.00. The painting had not been sold since 1891, when it was acquired through Agnew’s by Sir Edward Guinness, 1st.It was then passed by marriage into the Vanneck family.
Francesco Guardi was born in 1712 in Venice. He was a Venetian Painter of veduta. He is one of the last practitioners of the classic Venetian School of Painting. This is one of his most prized paintings and considered to be very rare.
