Here’s a fabulous original and rare John Robinson’s Circus poster. The graphics and color on this one-sheet (40 x 34-1/4”) stone litho poster are just outstanding. This is another great poster from the collection of Mr. Jack Morris, a long-time circus fan from Edmond, Okla. I don’t know the date of this poster, but there are historical references that help determine the age. Printed and glued on the back is “Circus Created in 1824.”
The snipe states John Robinson’s circus is in its 102nd year and the circus was in Lebanon (Ohio) Thursday, May 14 (1925). There’s a photo of John H. Robinson on the poster. As the photo reflects, there are condition issues. The old fragile poster has been stored flat in a metal drawer for years, but old early folding has caused stress areas. Along all the fold lines there are areas with missing flecks of paper.
There is brown tape residue where repairs were made years ago. There is edge damage with missing paper. All of the edge splits and tears and the stress areas have been reinforced on the back with pieces of painter’s tape to prevent further damage. The original borders were missing from the poster, so white paper borders have been attached with painters tape. The date snipe is loose. The photo best describes this old fragile poster. It’s a wonderful historical poster that is truly worthy of being linen mounted.
