Portrait of a Gentleman in Armour, 17th Century
circle of Micheal DAHL (1659-1743)
Large 17th century master portrait of a Gentleman in armour, oil on canvas. Exquisite work of portraiture from the period showing all of the signs of a leading artist during the late 1600’s, most notably Micheal Dahl. The study of the sitter shows all of the hallmarks of a maor hand in portrait painting from the toning of the flesh and the fine subtle brushwork in the hair. The artists handling of the treatment of light and detail in the armour is wonderful. The importance of the sitter is unquestionable and would likely have been a member of the court of William III. Equally the commissioning of painting such a sitter and the craftsmanship of the study would have only been undertaken by the best portrait painter available and possibly part of the court.
The painting is presented in a gilt and black frame and would benefit a clean and touching up to the areas with losses.
