Fantastic early Victorian leather dogs collar with four floral decorated metal plates.
This early dog collar measures approximately 6″ in diameter and 19½” long when stretched out. The main body of the collar is made from two bands of thick leather with four metal plates riveted to the outer leather band which all have either chased or moulded floral/foliate decoration. The foliate metal plates are more silvery in colour than the photographs show but I am not sure what the metal is? The collar also a brass chain which is 17″ long and I think is original to the collar and a working padlock and key which I suspect might be a later addition and possibly dates to the early 20th Century. It is marked NABIC.
I would say that the collar is in overall very good period condition considering its age, with a great patination to the leather and although there is one small puncture about ½” long and the two bands have seperated from each other in places the leather is still strong and pliable. I have added lots of photographs to the listing so that you can see close ups of the metal plates and decoration and assess the condition of the collar and I am happy to answer any of your questions.
I have found other Victorian dog collars being offered on ebay and also specialist websites but this is a really fine example with elaborate decoration and would make a fantastic addition to any collection.
