What you are looking at is a very rare perry vault lock. Patten given on June 22 1858 which makes this lock 154 years old. Stuart perry lived in Newport New York he had patterns for various items. including door locks and the fire pump apparatus. This lock uses gears with gates, there is no dial with numbers on it just the plane knob that is a key of sorts. The knob is removable to take with you. the way the lock works you push the knob in to the first Channel turn the knob to the right till it stops and it turns the gear aligning the gate in line with the fence on the bolt see pic. Now you turn the knob back to Center and push the knob in to align with the Second channel & turn to the right till it stops just repeat for the third gear .Now turn the knob back too center and pull the out and turn to the right to open the bolt see pic. The lock is 4″ long 3″tall & 1-3/8 thick and weighs 4 LBS.Very complicated lock.
