A rare 1880s Hammond No. 1 typewriter in Estate condition. Number(#) or seriel(#) is 4693. Metal plate reads The Hammond Typewriter Co. NY Pat’d with the following Pat Dates Feb 3 1880/ Feb 3 1880/ Sept 21 1880/ Nov 22 1881/Feb 1 1882 Dec 18 1883/ Dec 1883.   The body and case are wood and the keys are wood. Wood lid has a hole in it. 1 1/4 inch slit. 14 1/8 inches wide 7 inches high and 12 1/4 inches deep. Right lock is bent and hard to lock, but it does work. Both locks are marked H.T.W. Co. This is an Estate typewriter in Estate condition. This is an Estate condition Hammond #1 typewriter. This typewriter might need something as simple as oil. I think all the oils have gummed up over time. I don’t know what the bell shaped Hammer that strikes the ribbon is called so I’m calling it a hammer. When you depress a key it strikes the ribbon but falls back into place slowly. When gently assisting it back the bar moves to the left. When you push any key the ribbon spool turns. When you depress any key the spring loaded rods go up and down. The hammer feels gummed up could be a worn spring.
