Choice Prooflike Original medium  chocolate  brown Lincoln Presidential Medal 3″ Julian PR-12 US Mint dated 1865 but first struck by Mint in 1886

A fully reflective and prooflike 3 ” or 76 mm US Mint medal by engraver George T. Morgan depicting a high relief extremely well-detailed bust of Abraham Lincoln facing right, a prominent beaded border both sides and within the reverse wreath first and second Inauguration terms and Assassination in 1865. This is an original milk chocolate prooflike and mirror-reflective specimen, not the matte -surfaced golden-tan 20th century  restrikes you see so often on eBay. Absolutely Mint State.

The originals were struck in 1886 at the US Mint in bronzed copper, as this is . And thin planchet (see image) , relative to the width of the medal, something always distinctive about Mint-struck originals.

Originals  struck in 1886 by the US Mint, this Lincoln bust rendition is widely considered to be the finest medallic likeness of the Civil War President. These sell on occasion at NYC coin auctions for $450-$850 depending on quality. This is one of the better specimens. A few tiny superficial spots and one inconsequential reverse 12 o’clock peripheral discoloration.  But this is way better than the heavily edge-knocked medals one sees at auction with their defects ignored by the cataloguer and evident only to those examining lots.

A centerpiece to any Lincoln political or ephemera collection or Civil War collection display. Rare so nice and original.
