Antique VERY RARE German KUGEL 1876 Centennial World’s Fair Christmas Ornament.

Hidden Treasures is happy to offer you for your consideration this extremely rare authentic 1876 Centennial World’s Fair commemorative Kugel ornament!

Kugels are German made, hand-blown, unique glass balls first made in 1848. The first Kugels were of glass so thick that they were too heavy to use as Christmas tree ornaments, and were instead hung from the ceiling. Later, lighter kugels were the first non-organic Christmas tree ornaments ever produced! The 1876 Centennial World’s Fair was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from May 10th to November 10th and drew 10 million visitors – roughly 20% of the entire population of the United States at the time.

This Kugel was specially produced to commemorate this extraordinary event, at a time before Americans had become familiar with these distinctive ornaments.

The hand-blown glass globe is approx. 14 1/2″ in diameter and features bands of red against a white background, with flourishes and “1776 – 1876″ in the center of the wide middle red band and has a brass top fixture for hanging. The kugel is not marked in any way. It is in remarkably good condition, with no cracks or chips and minimal fading.

Due to the the fragile nature of the Kugels, no more than a handful are believed to have survived and this beautiful ornament is certain to appreciate in value. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
