    Description by seller: “The pieces offered in this auction are the Jaques Marshall design, fabricated from Boxwood and Ebony and manufactured between 1900 and 1920.  The Staunton Chessmen design came into official existence on March 1, 1849, when Nathaniel Cooke of 198 Strand, London, registered design number 58,607, “an ornamental design for a set of chess-men” under the British Ornamental Designs Act of 1842. Cooke licensed the right to manufacture these chessmen to the firm of John Jaques of London, noted wood and ivory turners founded in 1795”.
