In 1837, the visionary Blacksmith John Deere created a special steel plow. This made life easier for farmers to be very efficient for plowing. This device was built by John Deere in a modest blacksmith shop in the village Grand Detour, Illinois.
The hard part of the steel plow was polished with iron steel making it ideal for hard soil of the Midwest, working better than other plows. In 1843 Deere partnered with Leonard Andrus to produce more plows to keep the pace of construction on demand. In 1848, Deere dissolved the company Andrus and moved to Moline, Illinois due to its new location along the Mississippi River. By 1855, it had sold more than 10,000 plows. From the beginning Deere insisted on making high quality equipment. Deere then left the day to day work to his son, Charles. In 1868, Deere & Company created its business into a corporation. Deere died at home on May 17, 1886. The company he founded continued to operate after his death, becoming one of the largest manufacturers of agricultural and construction equipment in the world.
