Description by seller: “The wood panel on which the painting is made is structurally sound and in plane. There are scattered areas of retouching most notably in the beard, face, areas of the jacket and in the area of the painted inscription at the top. The figure’s face and hands are however, largely intact. The brush applied varnish is uneven and has blanched as can be most readily seen in the striated vertical brush marks in the jacket. There is a vertical scratch through the paint layer, located in the lower right quadrant above the book and two minute gouges in the figure’s proper left shoulder”.
